Clarice Brown Jones was born March 9, 1921 in Natchitoches, LA. She was united in holy
matrimony to LB Jones on October 29, 1938. To this marriage of 62 years, thirteen children
were born. Although she never completed high school, she received most of her formal
education in the public school system of Natchitoches, LA. Clarice Jones always emphasized the importance of education and she wanted much more for her children. Therefore, she
encouraged them to aspire to higher education. On April 26, 2000 God called Clarice Brown
Jones home. However, encouragement toward higher education left an indelible mark on her
family. In 2006 after reminiscing on her strong educational emphasis, Pastor Walter August
named the children’s ministry building of the Church at Bethel’s Family after Clarice Jones (his wife’s mother). After careful deliberation with other siblings, Ruby Jones-August spearheaded the move to establish a yearly scholarship in honor of Clarice Brown Jones. Together, the Jones siblings decided that the yearly dissemination of the Clarice Jones scholarship would not only show appreciation to Pastor August for naming the building but it would also pass on the legacy of higher education to future generations.
Today the Clarice Jones Educational building is the host site for events and activities for over 400 children weekly. Additionally, Bethel’s Family Christian Academy in the CJEB. Bethel’s Family Christian Academy has a current enrollment of 120 students from ages 18 months to 6 years (www.bethelschristiancademy.org). Activities in the CJEB are not exclusive to Bethel’s Family Christian Academy. For Sunday Morning Sunday School and Wednesday Night Bible Study, approximately 400 students attend classes in the CJ Educational Building. The energy, enthusiasm and educational heights reached in this building each week is phenomenal.
Ruby Jones-August works with the Youth Pastor and youth ministry leaders on the yearly selection of a Clarice Jones Scholarship recipient from the congregation of The One Church at Bethel’s Family. Two scholarships are given each year: one to a Clarice Jones family member and one to a Bethel’s Family church member. Any Scholarship recipient must be an active member of the Church in Bethel Youth Ministry and must have an acceptance letter from their preferred college/university. Family member scholarship recipients must be a descendent of Clarice Jones and must also provide a college/university acceptance letter. Applications are
available yearly to graduating seniors in the month of April via the Scholarship Committee for The One Church at Bethel’s Family.
